In 1916, probate ended in the estate of James, and the Alberta homestead was put in Mary's name. Family records tell us Mary moved back to West Virginia soon after, stopping at Josie's place on the way, where family photos were taken.

In 1917, son John Henry "Jack" Johnston registered for the WWI draft in Towner, North Dakota, and states he is currently working in Bow Island, Alberta as an auto mechanic, and supporting his widowed mother.

Mary Johnston married David F Hart April 10, 1920 at Leon, Mason County, West Virginia.

Mary is buried in Roseberry Hart Cemetery alongside her second husband David, and his first two wives, Mary Margaret Roseberry Hart (1860 - 1892) and Elizabeth Jane Steele Hart (1864 - 1919).
