Margaret Rash McClafferty (Peg), 90, passed away peacefully on June 30, in Los Angeles at the home of her daughter, Michelle Soleau and son-in-law, Michael.
She was born in 1922 in Ridgley, Maryland to John Thomas Rash and Helen Hance Rash. Warm and charming, Margaret touched the hearts of everyone she met. In 1938, she was voted "The Most Popular Girl" in her hometown. After graduation, she worked at the Ridgley Theater for a short time before moving to Wilmington to join her older sisters and eventually found work at the DuPont Company.
By the dawn of World War II, she was dating the "boy next door" who would become her husband of 65 years, William "Tilly" McClafferty. They were married in August of 1943. Their loving union created a family with a strong sense of values and commitment. Peg saw to it that her home was full of love and laughter. She instilled a strong sense of self in each of her children, challenging them to do their best, love their neighbors, and to respect the rights and views of others. Peg loved Delaware, neighborhood get-togethers, fine wine, frequent visits to her West Coast Family and Vice President Joe Biden. Her great warmth and positive attitude will be greatly missed, but her legacy will live on.
She is survived by her children Sandra McClafferty Lazare (John), Mark McClafferty (Pamela), Sean McClafferty, Michelle McClafferty Soleau (Michael), James McClafferty (Monica) and her grandchildren, John Scarborough (Cristina), Lee Scarborough, Kate McClafferty (Brian Glodney), Connor McClafferty, Jack McClafferty, Mark McClafferty, her great granddaughter, Ellie Scarborough, Kevin McDonald and Regina I. Brown. She is pre deceased by her husband, William T. McClafferty and her daughter, Deborah Scarborough (David).
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 10:30 am, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church. Friends may call at the church at 9:30am. Entombment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate the kindness of others in donating, to Duke Medical Center, "In the Memory of her daughter, Deborah Scarborough," DUMC Box 3624, Durham, North Carolina 27710. Attention: Donations or to the charity of their choice .
