James Cecil Dorsett, 89, of Roanoke, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at South Roanoke Nursing Home. He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., March 30, 1924, to the late Ida Bevins Dorsett and Everett Richard Dorsett. James had a large family of 13 siblings. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers. His wife Addie Lowe Dorsett, the love of his life, passed away October 23, 2005, at her Roanoke County home. James' surviving brother and sisters include Kathleen Sides and husband, Roscoe, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Harvey Dorsett and wife, Dickie, of Belews Creek, N.C., Alice Wahlfeldt and husband, Melvin, of Cleveland, Tenn.; and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins. Also surviving are four children, Jimmie R. Dorsett and wife, Patsy, of Hardy, Sandra C. Neighbors and husband, Glenn, of Roanoke, David L. Dorsett and wife, Joan, of Roanoke, and Johnny W. Dorsett, of Roanoke. James was blessed with seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
James was a World War II Veteran. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad. His favorite hobby was fishing and he was awarded many citations for his big catches. He was also a member of West Side Church of Christ where he was a faithful member until he was no longer able to attend.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Oakey's South Chapel with Minister Eddy Gilpin officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday, July 8, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke.
