Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. In September 1862, he enlisted in the 84th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was appointed 1st Lieutenant. With the 84th Regiment, he saw action in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina from late 1862 to 1864. For services as Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 84th at the conflict at Tunnel Hill, Georgia on February 24, 1864, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865.
