Jeanette Duncan Johnston, age 86 of Dennison, died on Thursday morning, July 4, 2013 at Three Links Care Center in Northfield, surrounded by her children.
Jeanette was born on April 25, 1927 in Cannon Falls, the daughter of William E. and Agnes J. (Johnson) Duncan. She attended Cannon Falls High School, and married Ralph L. Johnston on May 6, 1944 in Farmington. They moved to their farm in Dennison in 1946. Ralph died on July 7, 2002 and she continued to reside there. As a younger woman, she taught Sunday school and sang with the Randolph Baptist Church choir and was part of the "Ladies Trio" for many years.
Jeanette had been a receptionist at Mineral Springs Sanatorium from 1972-82, and later worked at Sheldahl in Northfield and Midwest Importers of Cannon Falls until retiring in 2002. Jeanette enjoyed the times she was able to travel and particularly loved the mountains and other scenic areas. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always looked forward to Sunday afternoons when family would gather at the farm to visit and eat Betty's baked goods. As she became more home-bound, she enjoyed feeding her birds, sharing her home with her "special" cats, and listening to both local sports broadcasts and, of course, the Minnesota Twins. Almost every Saturday morning, she shared a phone conversation with her sister Beverly and always appreciated the calls she received from her friends. Jeanette was an avid reader, and was a lifelong learner.
She is survived by her six children, Ralph Jr. (Mary) of Cleveland, MN, Betty (Bob) Lee of Randolph, Marjorie Berendt of Cannon Falls, John of Dennison, Janet (Calvin) Thielbar of Randolph and David (Margaret) of Dennison; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, with 2 expected shortly; sister, Beverly (Roger) Anderson of Sun City West, AZ; sisters-in-law, Jane Duncan, Annette Duncan and Myong Su Johnston; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; son-in-law, John Berendt; infant grandson, Thomas Robert Lee; sisters, Donna Estes and Virginia "Sally" Voshalike; and brothers, Donald and Gerald Duncan.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, July 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Randolph Baptist Church (29020 Dawson Ave, Randolph MN 55065) with The Reverend J. Roger Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Hampton Township.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 11 from 4-8 p.m. AT THE CHURCH.
Memorials are preferred in Jeanette's memory to St. Joseph's Indian School (1301 N. Main St, Chamberlain, SD 57325) and Union Gospel Mission (Department of Donor Services, 77 Ninth St. E., Saint Paul, MN 55101.)
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren and friends from confirmation class.
