Funeral services were held at 4:00 o'clock Friday afternoon, Aug. 9, for P.G. Allen, who died Thursday morning. Mr. Allen had gone to the Baylor County Hospital for an operation for hernia. This would have been nothing severe as an ordinary thin, but Mr. Allen had become badly run down, and when pneumonia set up at 2:00 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon his condition became rapidly dangerous, on account of low bodily resistance. He had been in failing health for the past year, but the family and friends had not even thought of his death becoming imminent with such suddeness.
Services were held at the Baptist church, with Pastor J.R. Balch in charge and assisted by Rev. T.C. Willett and Rev. Frank Wodell. A quartet composed of Lee W. Harris, John Chandler, Robert Jones and Jimmie Lester furnished special music, with Miss Burnett Jones at the piano. Special solo numbers were also given by Mrs. W.C. Williams and Miss Charlotte Wheat.
The active pall bearers were: Geo. S. Plants, F.H. Bunkley, Lon J. Blackburn, S.S. Know, W.B. Alexander, C.M. Randal, Tom Farr and Emmit Golden. The flower bearers were: Mesdames A.J. LaGarde, Willis Hughes, Tirey Harrison, A.J. Ballerstedt, Finn Caussey, Johnnie Landrum, Bob Garlington, Jimmie Hankins, Sam Jones, and Misses Jeanette Smith and Mary Ann Alexander. There was a magnificint array of floral offerings, attesting the esteem in which Mr. Allen was held. Internment was in the Masonic cemetery. A large crowd of sorrowing friends gathered to pay this last tribute of respect.

Philander G. Allen was born at Chico, Texas, on Nov. 14, 1881. His father died before he was born and his mother died when he was eight years old. After the mother's death P.G. went to live with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Martin of Park Springs, which is located in Wise County, 14 miles south of Bowie.
Growing to manhood at this place, Mr. Allen was united in marriage there to Miss Ada Houston, on Sept. 13, 1903. Then after living in Wise County for one year, the couple decided to cas their lot in Baylor county, arriving here in 1904 and settling on the farm which they still own in the Shawver community. They moved to Seymour 24 years ago, and have been living all that time in the residence which is still located just southwest of the courthouse.
Survivors in the immediate family are his wife and their two daughters, Mrs. W.D. Hunter and Mrs. Clinton Badgwell, with one grandchild, John Allen Badgwell, of whom the grandfather was very proud, and who was a boon companion. The Badgwells live in Seymour, and Mrs. Hunter and her husband are now, coming from Conersville, Tenn., and it is possible they may be located here in the future. A brother of Mr. Allen survives, W.F. Allen of Newport, West Virginia. Communication could not be established with him until it was too late for him to get here for the funeral.
Mr. Allen was a member of the Baptist Church, although his business had kept him from attending much during the past several years. He was a director in the Seymour Chamber of Commerce, and was an appraiser for the Federal Land Bank of Houston. He was a member of the W.O.W. Lodge, and was an active citizen in every worth way.
Mr. Allen was a friendly man, and one who took a lively interest in the affairs and progress of his community. He was an enthusiastic football fan, and would travel many miles to see his favorite stars perform. A beloved husband, father and friend has gone from us, long before we had even thought of his going. But the ways of providence are past finding out, and those who remain must adjust themselves to the new circumstances that arise day by day. The bereaved family have th sincerest sympathy of a host of friends.
