Elias Skaggs was born abt 1826 in Green County, Kentucky and died 10 November 1858 in the Greensburg Jail. He was a son of Richard Skaggs (1801-1891) and Jense Jane Martin (1803-1889).
He married Lucy Ann DeSpain on 19 February 1846, she the daughter of Peter DeSpain (1764-1850) and Nancy Skaggs (1759-1841). Elias and Lucy Ann had 5 living children: Sarah G.; Richard; Caroline; Jinsey; and Martha Jane.
From the Marriage bond list, the following entry: Skaggs, Elias and Lucy A. DeSpain. Bond 19 Feb 1846. Jacob Shoffner on bond. Consent by Richard Skaggs, father.
In the 1850 Taylor County, Kentucky census Elias Skaggs is head of household 235. He is 23 years of age, a farmer, born in Kentucky. His wife, Lucy A., is 25 and also born in Kentucky. They have two young children: Sarah A., 3; and Richard Skaggs, age 1 year. They lived next door to James H. Nelson, age 32, on one side; and Nancy Thompson, age 27, on the other.
Elias Skaggs committed suicide in 1858. He was in the Greenburg jail on trial for the murder of Henry Sympson when a mob came to hang him. To escape the fury of the mob, he slit his throat with a razor. His body was found by the mob and it was dragged down a flight of stairs and into the street.
