But before Mary was two years old, Lysander, too, died. When two years later, her mother Abigail gave birth to a son, her parents named him Lysander in honor of the half-brother Mary had lost.
When Mary was 21, she competed in the Berkshire Agricultural Society show and won a special reserved prize of $1 for the straw bonnet she had made. She may even have worn it when she married Marshall Pierce just a few days later.
Together she and Marshall ran their farm and raised their five children, all of whom she lived to see grow to successful, well-educated adulthood despite the outbreak of the Civil War, in which one of them served.

Clarissa Baldwin Pierce, born July 13, 1836, died after March 1868 (the end date of her second year of work as a missionary and teacher for the freedmen of the South.) She had become a young widow after her husband, Samuel H. Rossiter, died of his wounds in battle on July 9, 1863 during the Civil War.
