Marshall's 12th birthday fell six days after his father died. The seventh of 14 children born to the family, his surviving 10 siblings ranged in age from 23 years to 16 months.

He was born, married and died in Hinsdale, although it seems he and his wife left it for three years between 1833 and 1837, when he was dismissed and then re-admitted to the Congregational Church that he had belonged to since he was 19.

He was a farmer for almost all his adult life; a special survey of 1860 sketches an image of what his farm at that time was like. He owned 190 acres, of which 30 were unimproved, with a value of $3,800. He had 2 horses, 6 working oxen, 12 other cattle, 40 sheep and a pig. That year his farm had produced 20 bushels of wheat, 100 bushels of oats, 130 Irish potatoes, 12 bushels of barley and 50 tons of hay as well as 125 pounds of wool and 600 pounds of cheese.

But mostly what he was, it seems, was a kind man. In 1853 he was on a committee that donated money to the Massachusetts Home Missionary Society. That same year he was, in addition to being selectman, the Overseer of the Poor. And he was among those remembered with fondness by a schoolteacher, "Two winters I taught school in Hinsdale, one in the "North woods," and how I did enjoy my acquaintances there--Mr. Lysander Francis and his good father and mother, Deacon Clark and his two sons and families, Marshall and Erastus Peirce and their families, Elijah Wentworth and family, where it was a delight to board, or even spend a night on returning from singing school."

He clearly wanted the best for his children in terms of education and opportunity; he seems to have sent all of his children, boys and girls alike to 'The Academy', a secondary school that readied students for college. And he wanted the best for the rest of his family as well; he and his wife opened their home to his wife's mother in her old age; she lived with them at least from the time she was 81 (according to the census) until her death at 86.

Marshall and Mary had five children, all born in Hinsdale. In addition to Harlan Ashley Pierce (see below) they had:

Adeline Mary (or May Adeline), born Nov 16, 1833, died before August 4, 1909 (the date of her funeral), married Edwin Tremain

Clarissa Baldwin Pierce, born July 13, 1836, died after July 9, 1863 (the date she became a young widow after her husband died from his battle wounds), married Samuel H. Rossiter.

Lorenza (also Loenza or Laura), born July 25, 1842, died after 1901 (when she was listed as a widow in the Pittsfield, Massachusetts directory), married Osmer P. Clark

Francis Marshall Pierce (also Frank), born Oct. 21, 1847, died after 1910, probably in Southern California, served in Company K, Massachusetts 8th Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, was a Vice President in New York City in the 1880s, last known to be at the International Theosophical Headquarters in Point Loma, California, married Matilda M.
