Lester "Duke" G. Whittington, 89, of Hope, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home, Hope, after a five-year illness.

He was a retired farmer and drove a school bus for Clifty Township 18 years. He was a member of St. Louis Crossing Baptist Church and Morristown American Legion. A veteran of World War I, Whittington served in France.

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Norman Funeral Home in Hope, with the Revs. Orville Carmichael and Bonnie J. Plybon officiating. Calling will be from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice of charities.

Born Aug. 30, 1900, in Bartholomew County, Whittington was the son of Ben and Bertha Brooks Whittington. He married Hazel B. Bowers on Nov. 12, 1920. She survives.

Also surviving are sons, Charles B. Whittington of Hope and Lester W. Whittington of Wimauma, Fla.; daughters, Mary E. Glasson and Maxine R. Jackson, both of Columbus, and Elsie L. Hege of Hope; a sister, Carrie Merritt of Columbus; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett F. Whittington.
