Philadelphia Inquirer 14 Aug 1862 pg 8 list sick soldiers who were being transported aboard the Steamer Kennebec to hospitals in the north. (Philadelphia?) A. VanKirk was listed as "Died" Also U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 also lists him as dying on the Kennebec. Believe that he was picked up at Harrison's Landing, the ships first port and died before they got to Fortress Monroe, her second stop.
