As a youth he was in competition with his brother (Gene) to be the Soapbox Derby Champ. He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Falls, with whom he fathered one son, Loyd Darrell Jr. (Little "D" and one daughter Amy. He was in the U.S. Army and earned the rate of SP4. Most of his working life he worked in advertisment or newspaper management. Just before his death Republic Newspapers honored him with the title of Publisher Emeritus. He fought hard against the cancer that ended his life.
