Born in Stockholm, Edward went to sea at the age of 12 and stayed with it for 10 years. He arrived in California in 1867 and worked around Sacramento as a fish and poultry dealer, junk merchant, field laborer, butcher, and sausage maker. He eventually turned to crime (murder) and was executed by hanging.
