Freddie was born two months after the death of his father. His mother moved the family to Nebraska in September of 1874. She married Davis Sturdevant about 3 years later. Freddie and his siblings, Anna and Charles Albert Overton, were listed as step children in the 1885 Nebraska census. D. G. Sturdevant was a farmer.

Frederick married Cora May Ashburn March 1, 1899, in Central City, Merrick, Nebraska.
