Rev. Joseph R. Mays III, 67, St. Joseph, Missouri died Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

He was born December 10, 1945 to Joseph and Laura Mays in St. Joseph, Missouri.

He married Kae Matthews on June 20, 1969. She survives of the home.

Joseph was an associate minister, served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and played on the Iowa-Missouri Walnut Softball Team. Joseph was also the first black firefighter in St. Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers; and step-father, Harold Hughes.

Survivors: wife, Kae; son, Sean; daughter, Kala; mother, Laura Hughes; granddaughter, Jala; grandson, Javen; four brothers; four sisters-in-law; great aunt; and a host of family and friends.

Services: 10:00 A.M. Saturday,Family Worship Center. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, where friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Friday.
