In 1936, he joined the US military, later being part of the newly-formed US Air Force. In 1951, he married Thelma "Jean" Sanders of Silver Springs, Maryland. In 1957, after 21 years in the military, he retired and joined the California Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer working at California Medical Facility. Gaylon retired from the CDC in 1981. He enjoyed playing golf, weight lifting, hunting, and serving God as an active member of the Church of Christ.
Gaylon is survived by his wife Jean of Vacaville; son Gaylon Wamble Jr. (Linney) of Colorado; daughter Glenda Herpin (Carlton) of Louisiana; daughter Barbara O'Dell (Ray) of Vacaville; daughter Patricia Parks (Bob) of Winters; son Tim Wamble (Debbie) of Vacaville; two brothers: Bob Rowe (Fritzi) of Arkansas and Joe Wamble (Jean) of Michigan; one sister Vera Phillips (Berlie) of Arkansas; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation was held on March 27, 2013, at McCune Garden Chapel. Services were held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon the next day. Following the graveside service, a memorial service was held at the Church of Christ, 1501 Alamo Drive, Vacaville.
