Elijah BURT was born on March 10, 1808 in Georgia . As a small child, in the 1810s, his parents moved the family from Georgia to Tennessee . Elijah may be the son of a John BURT. This John BURT I believe to be the one that is listed as head of a Household in Franklin County , Tennessee in the 1820 and 1830 census. According to those census it appears he had at least 8 sons and 3 daughters. I believe some of the 8 sons names are: Ryal, Elisha, William, Elijah, Henry and Groves BURT. Groves would most likely be the 8th son and the 11th child of John. One of the three daughters I believe was named Nancy . In early Dekalb County marriage records a Nancy BURT and Preston BRIANT/BRYANT were married on April 10, 1843. John's wife appears to have died in the 1820s. Both John and his wife appear to have been born in the 1770s. According to the 1880 census Groves father is listed as born in Virginia . In Tennessee Elijah married Elizabeth "Betty" (it has been said that her maiden name was SATTERFIELD) in about 1829. I believe they were married in Franklin County , Tennessee . Franklin County has no marriage records for that time period. Betty was born on June 15, 1812 in North Carolina. They had the following children: Ryal BURT, Eliza Jo BURT, James "Jim" BURT, Henry BURT, Calvin BURT, Thomas "Tom" BURT, Elijah BURT, Jr., Elisha "Toby" BURT, Mary C. BURT, Sarah Elizabeth BURT, Permelia Pallestine "Pallie" BURT and Mackey BURT. Elijah, Betty and Ryal moved to Alabama in 1830 or 1831. I do not know when they came to DeKalb County , in 1830 and 1831 it was still part of the Cherokee Nation. I have seen in some records that a SATTERFIELD family in Georgia had intermarried with the Cherokees. It is possible that these could have been Betty's family and may have been what brought them to the DeKalb County area. Nevertheless Elijah is listed in the 1840 Census of DeKalb County and lived in Will's Valley area near Lebanon . According to Alabama Land Records he was granted the land patent of 159.4 acres on May 01, 1845. This land was located at Township 7S, Range 8E, Section 33. That location is southwest of Fort Payne near Lebanon and Collbran. Betty died on August 28, 1858 near Lebanon in DeKalb County . She is buried at the Shiloh Baptist Cemetery also located near Lebanon .

Elijah also married Mary "Polly" PRIVETT. Elijah and Polly were married on November 23, 1859 in DeKalb County, Alabama . Polly was born on November 11, 1827 in Tennessee . They had one child named George (Washington?) BURT. Elijah died on April 23, 1879 near Lebanon . He is also buried at the Shiloh Baptist Cemetery near Lebanon . Polly lived on their farm with her son and her two step daughters until her death. She died on October 29, 1905 near Lebanon . Polly is also buried at the Shiloh Baptist Cemetery .
