Don was the son of Judge Horace Harby and Daisy Bowman Harby. He attended Sumter, S. C. city schools and graduated from Sumter High School, class of 1928
(https://www.edmundshigh.com/alumni.html?x=info&c=28). He and Ervin Shaw were high school best friends and tennis players, playing in the state championship tournament in 10th or 11th grades in Greenwood, S. C. Don went to the Naval Academy for college.

From Don's sister's daughter, Zelime McKeown Lentz, in March of 2017: "Don's wife Eleanor Dillingham was first married to Dana Dawes who was adopted after the death of Rufus, V. P. Dawes' & wife's biological son. Don & Dana were classmates at the Academy. Dana & Eleanor had two children and later divorced."

After Eleanor died, Don married Freddie (Fredricka Curtis?).

Don built what would become Ervin's home (in about 1959): #7 Frank Clarke Street. Don sold it to Dr. Stuckey & moved to Hawaii in 1951; Dr. Stuckey later sold it to Ervin Shaw in the summer of 1960.
