JACKSON PARISH GIRL AWARDED FREE TRIP TO NATIONAL MEETING
Miss Marlene Bond, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elder Bond, of Jonesboro, left recently for Chicago, Illinois, where she attended the 28th annual National 4-H Club Congress. The Kellogg Company awarded her this trip, with all expenses paid, for winning the Louisiana 4-H Health Improvement Contest. Marlene is a senior in the Jonesboro-Hodge High School of Jonesboro and will celebrate her 17th birthday on June 9, 1950. She has been very active in 4-H Club work for the past 5 years. During this time she has participated in many activities toward participating better to health to her family, friends and immediate family. During the chest X-ray drive, Marlene sent letters to every club member asking to rhave an X-ray made. To this request she was given full cooperation. She has also collected to the March of Dimes, Red Cross, Christmas and Easter Seals. She has assisted at the Health Unit.

One day she weighted 12 babies, filled out immunization cards and called the next one for shots. Marlene gives much credit to Mrs. Virgia Harlow, the health nurse of Jackson Parish in Jonesboro for the much help in her health work. At the courthouse in Jonesboro, a bulletin board carries health material posted by her on "Cleanliness, Foots and Cancer," This material was obtained from the Health Unit and the American Cancer Society. Having read all available material on cancer, Marlene has become acquainted with this type of work. She assisted other 4-H members during the parish fair in distributing cancer literature. She has, through cooperation of Mrs. C. L. Cothran, head of the local Cancer Society, been able to order a film on cancer and will show it to the high school students in the near future.

With the permission of Mr. W. C. Rundell and Mr. John Haile, principals of the Hodge and Jonesboro Elementary Schools, respectively, to give talks to their school children on health habits. Marlene contacted Mr. W. G. Bailey, principal of the Jonesboro-Hodge High School, and Mr. L. V. DeCou, supervisor of the Jackson parish schools, about health films that include: "Care of the Teeth," "Carrying the Injured," "Home Nursing & Posture." A program was written and presented to the local FHA (Future Homemakers of America) of Jonesboro at an assembly, "The Teen-Ager and Her Health Problems." In this program, Marlene stressed the importance of the diet and safety. Being health project leader in her club, she has asked everyone else to use good habits and keep a health record. Health films have been shown along this line.

Marlene has made 10 talks on 4-H Club work, written 30 news articles on 4-H, attended a short course at Baton Rouge for 2 years, attended Camp Grant Walker at Pollock 1 year, attended leadership camp at Pollock 1 year, served as president of Jonesboro FHA (Future Homemakers of America) this year, attended the Southern Region FHA meeting in Memphis in June, 1949, served as historian of Jonesboro-Hodge High School FHA in 1948, attended first National FHA meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, in July of 1948; attended parish district and state FHA meetings. Marlene has spoken at parish and district FHA meetings, got 1st place in biology at North Louisiana Rally in April, 1949, 4th place in Home Economics II in North Louisiana Rally, Aprin, 1949, 3rd in English I at North Louisiana Rally, April, 1948.

Marlene is a member of the Spanish Club and served as class officer 3 years, has 7 years of private music lessons. She does baby-sitting in her spare time.

When asked what her plans were after she finishes high school, her quick reply was to enter Louisiana Tech and take a pre-med course, then she plans to attend Louisiana State University Medical School and probably specialize in Pediatrics.

Marlene, a friendly girl, is 5 feet & 6-1/2 inches tall, weights 122 pounds. Her eyes are blue and her red hair has a natural wave. She was escorted to Ruston where she boarded the rain to Jackson, Mississippi, by Mr. Inez K. Bowman, acting home demonstration agent for Jackson parish. She spent Friday night at the Edwards Hotel, both to and from Chicago. Sunday afternoon, Marlene attended a get acquainted tea given in honor of the health improvement contact by the Kellogg Company. Tuesday morning she attended the annual recognition breakfast for health improvement winners. Both events were held in the Havana Room of the Blackstone Hotel.

Entertainment at the meal events was a highlight for everyone as James Melton and Fred Warning and his Pennsylvanians and a galaxy of sports stars were on hand to entertain.

Tours around points of interest in Chicago included the International Livestock Exposition where boys and girls were guests for the horse show in a colorful parade. About 1,500 $-H boys & girls & leaders for all 48 states, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico will headquarter in the Stevens Hotel in Chicago. Thirty-five (35) international representatives from 15 countries were guests.

AREA DIETETIC ASSOCIATION HOLDS MEETING
The Northeast Area Dietetic Association met at St. Francis Hospital, Tuesday night, November 10, 1959. Members were welcomed by Sister Martha de Bethanie, who is in charge of the dietary department at St. Francis. Mrs. Alton A. Braddock, president, conducted the business meeting.

The meeting was then turned over to Miss Marlene Bond, the program chairman. Miss Bond gave a report on the Annual Convention of the American Dietetic Association, which she attended last August in Los Angele, California. She distributed materials brought back to the members present. Miss Marlene Bond was appointed to fill the position of secretary of the Louisiana Dietetic Association.

DIETETIC THERAPY INSTITUTE HELD IN NEW ORLEANS
Miss Marlene Bond of Monroe, president of the Louisiana Dietetic Association, is presiding at a two-day Graduate Diet Therapy Institute for Dietitians being held today and Wednesday in New Orleans. Miss Bond is supervisor for the Northeast Area School Lunch Section of the Louisiana Department of Education. Today's program stresses a "Review of Current Knowledge About Atherosclerosis." The Wednesday program will be on "The Role of the Dietitian in the Prevention of Atherosclerosis and in the Care of the Heart Patient."

RITES SATURDAY FOR MISS BOND, AREA SUPERVISOR
Funeral services for Miss Marlene Bond, 33, of 414 Glenmar Steet, Monroe, who died Thursday will be at 4 pm Saturday at the Jonesboro Methodist Church by Rev. Eldred Blakely. Burial will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery by Edmonds Funeral Home.

Miss bond, who was the school lunch supervisor for the Northeast Louisiana area, was well known in the state for her work in the dietetic field. In the position which she held at the time of her death, she was responsible for supervising the lunch program of 20 different school systems in this part of the state.

Miss Bond was a native of Jackson Parish, having live in Jonesboro-Hodge until she completed college at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, obtaining her B. S. in Home Economics, Education and Institutional Management in 1955. She did graduate work at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City, obtaining a M. S. in Nutrition and Dietetic Internship, and a Master of Public Health in Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Prior to the area position which she held, Miss Bond was Public Health Nutritionist, Louisiana State Board of Health from 1957-62; and was Clinic Dietitian at Duke University Medical in Durham, North Carolina from 1956-57.

At the time of her death she was serving as delegate and editor of the Louisiana Dietetic Association State Bulletin. She was a past president of the Louisiana Dietetic Association, and was a member of several state and national dietetic associations.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Jonesboro.
