She died on January 1, 1943, in Burlington, Iowa, at the age of 76 and is buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. Her grave stone reads "Hettie R. Swan / Sept 15, 1866 - Jan 1, 1943". The stone also contains the information of her sister Bertha S. Vogt.
