Ucil Ste. Marie Baker
Nov 16, 1919 - Jun 18, 2013
Resident of Concord

Ucil Ste. Marie Baker passed away peacefully in Oakland, California, after a life devoted to her family, friends, and country. Her family loved her deeply. Her beloved husband, Nelson, predeceased Ucil in 2009. She is survived by her children, Suzanne, Jeffrey, Nelson, Jr., and Jill; grandchildren Michelle Linton, Joshua Baker, Daniel Shoup, Alexandrea Baker, and Matthew Baker; great-grandchildren Ryann and Reese Linton, Shea Erickson, and Damien Shoup; her son-in-law Laurence Shoup, daughter-in-law, Karen Baker, former daughter-in-law Christine Emery; and many nieces and nephews. Ucil was a lovely woman, always kind to her family and friends and willing to help. She had a dry sense of humor that everyone enjoyed. She will be greatly missed. Ucil was born in Klondike (Brazeau Township), Wisconsin, in a small country store owned by her parents, Oscar and Abigail Ste. Marie. Ucil was adventuresome and in 1942 moved to Washington D.C. to work for the Office of Price Administration, then joined one of the first WAAC detachments in 1943, becoming a 1st Lieutenant and serving on recruiting duty in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico. While stationed in Albuquerque, she met and married Nelson Baker, a handsome Army Captain, in November 1944. They remained together for 65 years, traveling the world for 20 years until Nelson retired from the Army in 1961. They then moved to California, living in Tustin and Los Gatos, then in Concord for over 30 years. In addition to being a wonderful wife and mother, Ucil loved to travel and study French and was often active in community, retired military, and church activities. The family extends their gratitude to the wonderful caregivers and other staff at her residence, Lakeside Park in Oakland. They gently and lovingly took care of and laughed with Ucil in her last two years.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. Bonaventure Church, 5562 Clayton Road, Concord on Monday, June 24, 2:00pm, with burial at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon, CA, on Thursday, June 27, at 9:30am.
