Roy Gilbert Stroop, 86, a resident of Crestwood at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, and formerly of Linville, died Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Stroop was born April 6, 1921, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Lester E. and Rebecca Griffith Stroop.

He worked for Southern Lime and Stoneworks in Linville and most recently drove a truck for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 32 years. He was a member of Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church.

On Dec. 24, 1942, he married the former Margaret Shank, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Larry W. Stroop of McGaheysville and Roy J. Stroop of Linville; two sisters, Mable Payne and Maxine Perry, both of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Ruel Lee Stroop of Harrisonburg and Russell Stroop of Keezletown ; six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Bob Smith will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Singers Glen Cemetery .

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the home of his wife, at VMRC, Crestwood, room number 305.
