Mrs. Joseph Carroll Dies in Mitchell
A busy useful life was drawn to a peaceful close on Saturday, December 9, 1939, when Catherine Carroll breathed her last at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.B. Till at Mitchell.

With the passing of Mrs. Carroll, Time has erased another name from the ever decreasing roll of sturdy pioneers who, by their courage and industry, have contributed so much to the upbuilding of our state.

Catherine Carroll, the daughter of John and Bridget McNiff, was born at Hastings, Minnesota, March 22, 1982 [year is wrong--should be 1852] At the age of nineteen, she was united in marriage with Joseph Carroll who, with four children preceded her in death.

Coming to Dakota Territory with her husband in the autumn of 1880, Mrs. Carroll settled on a farm east of Emery. Here she shared, with her pioneer neighbors, the privations of the historic winter of 1880; when the deep snow isolated the early settlers for months from all contact with the outside world, and made them dependent on their own resourcefulness to supply the necessities of life. Always busy with the cares of her own home and family, Mrs. Carroll was never too busy to answer a neighbor's appeal for help.

As she faced the hardships of pioneer life cheerfully and uncomplainingly so Mrs. Carroll met every emergency of life. Humbly bowing her own will to that of the Master she willingly bore every burden He laid on her shoulders; and as her long life drew to its close, she patiently waited for His call, "Come, thou good and faithful servant."

Surviving, to mourn her loss are five daughters; Mrs. Elizabeth Turner of Ft. Pierre, S.D., Mrs. Margaret Gross of Pocatello, Idaho, Mrs. Della Chubback of Blackfoot, Idaho, Mrs. J.B. Till of Mitchell and Mrs. W.J. Vandanacker with whom she has made her home for many years.

Always a fervent Catholic, Mrs. Carroll died comforted by the last rites of her church and on Tuesday December 12 after a requiem high mass celebratetd by Rev. Father L. Brunner, she was laid to rest beside her husband and children in St. Martin's cemetery.

Pall bearers were Leo Schroeder, Frank Moran, Tom Fahy, John Carlon, Ralph Till and Joseph Vandanacker.
