DEATH OF NICHOLAS UHL

The death of Nicholas Uhl, which occurred early Tuesday morning, June 26, 1917, removes one of our older business men and a citizen who as a boy had grown up in this village and had assisted in the development of many enterprises proposed for the benefit of Dansviile. He had been a clerk, a merchant, a bank director, president of the village, and in everyone of these positions he proved industrious, capable, sagacious, and honest, the qualities that brought; him the friendship of many and esteem that is more to be desired than gold. He was loyal to his friends, industrious in his business, and his integrity was never questioned. His death is lamented, and while he will soon pass out of memory, his virtues will live on forever.

Mr. Uhl's parents were Germans who came here to better their fort dues, and Nicholas was born on the ship while en-route. The boy was given some schooling, but early in life he was obliged to go to work, and he went into James Krein's grocery and applied himself so energetically that he was soon promoted to a clerkship in the dry goods store of Fielder & Olney where he remained as such until 1870, when he formed a Co-partnership with W.T. Spinning and W. A. Spinning and the firm purchased the interest of the old firm and the new firm, was continued for nearly thirty years when Mr. Uhl retired. Since that time he had lived a quiet life owing to poor health, but being more or less interested in public affairs he accepted the Office of village trustee which he held one term and later Was elected president of the village and continued in office six years. He had for years been a member of the St. Bonefacius society of St. Mary's church, serving it as president and in minor positions, and for some time he had been a stockholder and director in the Merchants & Farmers National Bank.

Mr. Uhl is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Mary Dolloph of this village, to whom he was married in 1878, and by a sister Miss Kate Uhl and brothers Jacob Uhl the Civil war veteran and Frank Uhl the druggist. The funeral services will be held from St. Mary's church Friday morning at 9:30, Rev. Leo. G. Hofschneider to officiate, interment in Greenmount.

The cut of Mr. Uhl shown above was made a few years ago, and it shows him when in his prime and as he appeared on the street or at his place of business.

The following gentlemen, directors of the Merchants and Farmers National Bank, will act as honorary bearers; Wm. Kramer, W. A. Spinning, J. M. Edwards, J. G. Kramer, Dr. F. R. Driesbach, Dr. B. P. Andrews; and the active bearers are to be Robert Pratt, Peter Laforce Chas. W. Rauch, P. E. Blum, Frank Eschrich, Daniel Blum.
