Vernon served his county in the United States Army during WWII, serving in the Pacific. He attended 2 years of college at Tyler Commercial College, and retired in 1984 after serving 43 years as a clerk for the Cotton Belt and Southern Pacific Railroads and was a member of the North Jefferson Church of Christ in Mount Pleasant.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill Garrett.
