Robert Dell Taylor, age 81 of Melvin died at Port Huron General Hospital on June 28, 2005. He was born on January 09, 1924 to the late Clarence E. and Elsie L. (Moran) Taylor in Speaker Twp., Sanilac County, Michigan.

He married Miss Donna Wilson of rural Yale on January 17, 1947 at the Melvin Baptist Church parsonage. He and Donna made their home in Melvin throughout their 58- year marriage. Since 1987 they wintered in Zephyrhills, Florida.

Bob graduated from Yale High School in 1942 and in April of 1943 was drafted into the U.S. Army-Air Corp. He served as a ball turret gunner on a B-24 Liberator as a member of the 15th Air Force; the 276th Bomb Group and the 515th Bomb Squadron. On February 21, 1945 he and his crew crash-landed over southern Italy and as a result Bob was hospitalized for seven months. He was honorably discharged from Thayer General Hospital in Nashville, TN in September of 1945, having been awarded a bronze battle star and the purple heart. Bob is a member of American Legion Post 0489 in Peck; VFW Post 8594 in Yale, and the Disabled American Veterans in Port Huron.

In January of 1950 Bob was appointed mail carrier out of the Melvin Post Office, a position he held until his retirement in April of 1986. In 1984 he was recognized by postal officials for "outstanding performance in driving one million accident-free miles."

He is survived by his wife, Donna, and two children: Jane E. (Rodney) Getz of Pennrose, North Carolina and James R. (Cheri) Taylor of Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers and a sister: George (Colleen)Taylor of Daytona Beach, Florida, Dale (Marilyn) Taylor of Bridgeport, Michigan and Anita (Wally) Braniff of Marysville, Michigan. He was prededed in death by a brother and two sisters: RG (Doris) Taylor of Marlette, Michigan, Lorraine (Alvah) Wanamaker of Brown City, Michigan and Julia Taylor, who died in infancy.

A memorial service for Bob was held on July 22 at the Kaatz Funeral Home in Yale with the Rev. William Norris officiating. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Melvin. A time of refreshments and fellowship followed at the Melvin Fire Hall in Melvin.
