Randall Yates

Randall Renfro Yates, age 87, Joplin, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2013 at a local nursing center.

Randall was born July 3, 1925 in Baxter Springs, Kansas, son of the late Woods Creel Yates and Helen America Renfro Yates.

He attended school in Joplin, and served with the United States Marine Corp during World War II. He was a Corporal with the 2nd Marine Division where he was a decorated soldier fighting at the landing of Saipan, in Tinnian, Okinawa, and Nagasaki, Japan.

He was co-owner of Green Yates Appliance where he worked from 1963 until 1976. He then teamed up with his daughter Vicky, and son-in-law Chris Branch to form Yates Trackside Furniture where he was active until his retirement in 1991.

He enjoyed bowling, was a member of the Joplin Elk's Lodge #501, the Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club, and was also a member of First United Methodist Church of Joplin.

He enjoyed spending his free time with family, and fishing, and traveling throughout the United States with his wife, Betty.

In addition to his parents, Randy was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Yates.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Betty Jean York Yates; son, Tim C. Yates and wife Lynne of Joplin; daughters, Sandy Risor, Vicky Branch and husband Chris Branch all of Joplin; grandchildren, Ryan Branch and Jennifer, Brooke Lawrence and husband Cameron, Shane Lee and wife Heather, Tim Yates and Jessica, Tyler Yates, and Spencer Yates; great-grandchildren, Preston, Sierra, Robby, Hannah, Lauren, Zach, Taylor, and London.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 21, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Joplin with Pastor Bruce Jacobs and Rev. Louise Reed officiating.

Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church on Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Joplin Humane Society.
