Lavina Nunn was born on January 22, 1849, in Whitely County, Kentucky. Her parents are Lewis and Elizabeth Nunn. At the age of 15, she married William R. Kirk. Four children were born to the couple with two dying in infancy.

The family came to Kansas in 1882 in a covered wagon. They settled first in Harper County, Kansas, and in 1884 moved to Ford County. William was killed in a hunting accident. He was standing up in a wagon while loading his gun. The horses suddenly moved and the gun discharged killing William. He is buried in the First Congregational Church Cemetery in Fowler, Meade County, Kansas.

Lavinia remarried in 1887 to Nehemiah D. Cochran**. He died after suffering from consumption for over two years. Lavinia died on January 27, 1922.

**His obituary says he should be buried in Maple Grove Cemetery. I am unable to find his headstone.
