The son of John & Lydia (Stone) Hollenbaugh, in 1860 he lived with and/or worked for farmer John Garber in Madison Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Philadelphia July 16, 1864, mustered into state service there July 20 as a private with Co. E, 1st Pennsylvania (Stewart's) Independent Militia Battery, and honorably discharged with his company November 24, 1864. He was absent sick at muster-out, so his company commander accepted his discharge. (He is easily confused with - as did this post for some time - a different David Hollenbaugh of the same age , apparently also from Perry County, who served with the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry and is buried in Kansas.)

He married Sarah M. Yohn and fathered Ellen Jane (b. 11/24/71 - married Jacob Hostetter Myers), Harry J. & Laura R. (b. 09/24/73, Harry died 04/18/76, Laura married George L. Peterson and lived to 99), Maude Anna Mary (b. 11/21/77 - married Harry Jarret Zander), Charles Calvin (b. 09/12/79), Elizabeth R. (b. 07/18/81 - married Charles Miller and William Rodgers), Thomas Martin (b. 11/12/85), John J. (b. 03/26/88), and Ida Pearl (b. 06/21/91).
