Josiah Tipton Bailey Gillespie was born in Madison Co, NC to Jesse R Gillespie and Elender "Sade" Shelton Gillespie, both of Madison Co. He was evidently their only son, his parents split up before or after his birth & he was living with his aunt Clarissa/Clearsy Gillespie Marrow & her husband Harrison Marrow in 1880. His mother Sade remarried in 1885 but she had at least 2 other children before the 2nd marriage by someone other than Jesse Gillespie: Agnes Porthna Lavada Jane Shelton who married Campbell Rinehart and James William Doggett who later went by Lindsey; Sade went on to have 7 children of whom 5 were still alive in 1910 according to the 1910 census.

Sade was born in March 1852-3 to James Tipton "Buffer Jim" Shelton and Agnes Gosnell Shelton, she was married at least twice, first to Jesse R Gillespie, 2nd to Reuben A Lindsey, both marriages performed in Madison Co. She lived most of her life in Madison Co., NC and died 22 Nov 1924 in Beaverdam in Haywood Co., NC near Canton where 2 of her last 3 sons lived. (Sade may have been married to a Levester, per the 1880 census)

I do not know what happened to Josiah's father Jesse Gillespie, as I have not found him on any census after 1870. I was told by a cousin that he may have died in Cocke Co., Tennessee before or around 1910.

Josiah was evidently raised by his aunt Clarissa Gillespie Marrow & her husband Harrison Marrow, they were living together in 1880 and 1900. Josiah moved to Greenville, SC by 1910, he & his wife Mary Jane Lee lived there as late as 1935. Josiah and Mary Jane married 28 October 1893 in Cocke Co., TN. They had at least 9 children, his oldest was named Clarissa after his aunt, his 2nd was a son he named Jesse for his father. In 1933 Josiah was living on 13B Church St in Greenville & was working for the American Spinning Company as a Framer. His son Jesse & his wife Josephine were living in Greenville and working in Woodside Mill.

Josiah was living on 32 Davis St. in Greenwood when he died, his informant on his death certificate was Mrs GM Campbell, she stated she did not know who his parents were. His wife of 51 years had predeceased him in 1944. They are both buried at Bold Spring Baptist Church.
