Adam Stanton, son of John Stanton born in 1749 in Charlestown, R.I., married Elizabeth Treat at Preston, Conn, Dec 4, 1777. He moved from Westerly, R.I. to Middlesex County Conn., in 1774-1775, and settled in Killingworth, in the southern part, which is now called Clinton. He built his house on the lot where stood the house of Abraham Pierson, the first president of Yale college. The timbers of Pierson's house are now in the Stanton house. Adam died in Clinton, Oct 15, 1834. Elizabeth was a daughter of Rev. Samuel Treat of Preston, Conn., she was born May 28, 1854, at Preston, and died May 23, 1805, in Clinton. Adam's first business was making salt from the water of Long Island Sound, sending it by ox trains to Boston and selling it for $2 a bushel. Their children were:
