CALDWELL, The Rev. R. Martin Jr., 84, died Monday, May 27, 2013 at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C.
He was a Spartanburg, S.C. native, born August 5, 1928 to the late Ralph M. Sr. and Ruth Ezell Caldwell of Spartanburg. His sister, Nancy C. Carlisle of Spartanburg; and her children, Nancy Mason Carlisle of Spartanburg and John Martin Carlisle of Nevada, survive him. Also surviving Rev. Caldwell are his wife, Elizabeth "Ki" Shinnick Caldwell; daughter, Jennifer C. Vogel her husband, Vann; and their children, Katharine, Peter and Susanna of Basking Ridge, N.J.; daughter, Rebecca C. Fowler and her husband, Oscar, of Loudon, Tenn.; and Ki's daughter, Whitney B. Vaughan, whom he loved as his own.
Rev. and Mrs. Caldwell had recently begun their "retirement" by moving from their longtime home in Durham to Chapel Hill, N.C.
Rev. Caldwell graduated from Davidson College in 1947 and from Duke Divinity School. He was an Episcopal priest for 60 years. His longest serving parish was Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines, N.C., where he was prominent in civic affairs.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Va. Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Durham, N.C., is assisting the family. Online condolences may be shared at www.hallwynne.com.
