US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Merle Roy Barrows enlisted in the Marine Corps 13 May, 1941 from Waterloo, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 3rd Recruit Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA.

Assigned to E Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division at MCB Camp Elliott, CA. Promoted to Private First Class.

1 July, 1942 embarked USS President Hayes (APA-20) at San Diego for movement overseas. 25 July, 1942 landing rehearsals at Koro, Fiji.

7 August, 1942 participated in combat operations D-Day Tulagi, Solomon Islands attached to the 1st Marine Division.

9 August-28 October, 1942 occupied Tulagi Island. 29 October, 1942 landed on Guadalcanal and participated in combat operations until 12 January, 1943.

31 January, 1943 embarked USS Monticello (AP-61). 6 February, 1943 arrived at Wellington, New Zealand based at Camp Russell as part of the 2nd Marine Division. 6 April, 1943 promoted to Corporal.

30 October, 1943 embarked USS Zeilin (APA-3) at Wellington. 7-14 November, 1943 landing rehearsals at Efate, New Hebrides. Killed in Action Red Beach Two Tarawa D-Day 20 November, 1943

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Roscoe A and Mrs Anna S Barrows, 632 Wyoming Street, Waterloo, Iowa.

Orinally buried in a 2nd Marine Division Cemetery on Tarawa.

1947 processed for repatriation to the US at Schofield Barracks Mausoleum # 1, Oahu, Hawaii.

11 November, 1947 permanent burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa.
