William Keane was baptized on September 29, 1875 in Castleconnell, Limerick and Tipperary, Ireland, the son of John Keane and Honora Fee. He married Alma Wynona Hart on November 24, 1905 in Manhattan, New York City, NY. According to his obituary, William was one of five Irish immigrant brothers who devoted their lives to service on the Pennsylvania Railroad and became engineers on the road's best express trains. The other brothers were John, Dennis, James and Patrick. In addition to his wife and two children, William was also survived by a sister, Miss Nora Keane, of Limerick, Ireland, who was a survivor of the Titanic disaster, having been one of the last to leave the vessel "relatives said." An April 1912 article about Nora surviving the Titanic sinking also mentioned a brother, Michael and a sister, Mary Jones. An older brother, Peter, remained in Ireland.

William and Alma were the parents of two children:
1. "Jack" John Hart Keane
2. "Virginia" Nora Virginia (Keane) Dapp Street
