Jacob Frederick (Fred J.) Birmelin passed away on Monday, March 28, 1898, at 6:30 a.m. at his home on Harker Street, death coming two days later after a large cylinder, suspended from a crane fell on him while working at the Aultman-Taylor company’s boiler shop, breaking his back.

Frederick was born on April 20, 1860, in Mengen, Schallstadt, Baden, Germany and is the son of Mrs. Jacob (Christina Birmelin) Finfgelt (German form of the name is written as Funfgeld and sometimes as Funfgelt) of Mansfield.

Fred emigrated to Mansfield in 1880, and was the husband of Barbara Flockerzi, and the father of seven children, Frederick George, George Frederick, Charles Frank, Conrad, William, Annie, and Elizabeth.

Fred was the brother of sisters Anna Maria (Mary) Birmelin Gimbel (Americanized to Gimble) and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Birmelin Roessel of Mansfield and Maria Katharina Birmelin Staublin of Mengen, Schallstadt, Baden, Germany, and of brothers George J. (Johann George) Finfgelt (German form Funfgeld/Funfgelt) of Mansfield, and Gebhardt Birmelin (Birmele) of Brooklyn, New York.
