Birth information is from an obituary and agrees with his age-at-death, 81y, 1m, 10d on his marker.

He was married first to Phebe Turner in April 1842, probably in Onondaga County, New York. She died on 14 February 1844, probably in Onondaga County, New York. They had a daughter Elzina who married first to George "Pod" Gates and later to Samuel Ellet.

Nathan next married to Susan McConner in 1851. When she died in 1892, he remarried in 1894 to Mary Cherry who married as Mary Wilson. Mary survived Nathan.

Although the attached obituary reports that Nathan Smith had a daughter who was the wife of Alfred Hunt, this has to be a mistake. The 1887 History of Huntington County, Indiana, reports that Nathan's daughters by his second wife, Susan McConner, were Mary F., wife of Isaiah Dill and Laura O., wife of Charles Hunt. Charles Hunt and wife Laura were still married and living in Wells County, Indiana, when the 1900 Census was recorded, which was after Nathan died. Indiana marriage records report Charles Hunt's marriage in 1872 to Ophelia Smith. Nathan Smith's daughter who married Mr. Hunt had to be Laura Ophelia Smith, the name by which descendants knew her, and Mr. Hunt had to be Charles Hunt.
The 1900 Census for Alfred Hunt in Huntington County, Indiana, reports that he had a wife named Anna and that they had been married 13 years, which places their marriage around when the above cited history was published. Furthermore, Nathan Smith did not have a daughter named Anna, which contradicts the report that he had a son-in-law named Alfred Hunt.
The mistaken reference to Alfred Hunt as a son-in-law in the obituary probably resulted from confusion surrounding several marriages between the Smiths and Hunts in Huntington County. One of these was the marriage of Charles Hunt's brother Alfred whose second wife was Anna Smith who was probably the daughter of Nathan Smith's brother William Smith.
As noted above, the Mrs. Sam Ellet mentioned in the obituary was Nathan Smith's daughter Elzina by his first marriage.

Nathan Smith's sons are named Delvin, Marion and Cassius in the obituary. Their full names were Firman Delavan or Delavan Firman, Francis Marion and Cassius Emerson. A 1914 History of Huntington County (pages 819-821) reports a biography for Francis M. Smith, which repeats much of the information found in the 1887 History of Huntington County about Nathan Smith including his early life and his marriage to Susan McConner. It mentions Nathan's first marriage and the death of his first wife but does not mention his daughter Elzina by his first wife.
The 1914 history has the following specific information about Nathan and Susan's children:
To Nathan and Susan Smith were born the following children: Mary F., wife of Isaiah Dill of Michigan; Laura O., who married Charles E. Hunt; F. D. of Rock Creek township; Francis M.; and Cassius E., a farmer of Wexford County, Michigan.
F. D. in the history is clearly Firman Delavan; he appears in early censuses with both Firman and Delavan as a name. Francis M. was Francis Marion, subject of the 1914 history.
