Indiana Governor. He was a successful lawyer, he served in the United States Army during World War II, rising from a 1st Lieutenant in the 18th Infantry Division to Lieutenant Colonel and member of the Division's command staff. After the war served as the national commander of the American Legion from 1949 to 1950. In 1952 he was elected as a Republican as the 39th Governor of Indiana, serving until 1957. While in office, he created the state's Department of Correction and reorganized the State Department of Health to provide better mental health care. The end of his term was marred by a bribery scandal that involved high ranking state officials. After his term, he opened a law office in Virginia and later became president of an automotive company. He moved to California, in 1965, practiced law, returned the Indiana, in 1967, continued practicing law and until retiring in 1986. He was active with the Republican Party as a political adviser until his death at age 83.
