LaGrange Minister, Woman Found Dead on DeGroat St.
City Police Term Deaths Apparent Murder, Suicide.

An elderly woman apparently fatally shot the pastor of her church in LaGrange Wednesday and then killed herself with the same gun, according to City Police.

Capt. Ralph Scarbrough, chief of detectives, said the Rev. JAMES OWEN HARDY, who recently was ordained as a Church of God minister, was found shot to death in a bedroom of his home at 612 DeGroat Street.

Mrs. Hattie Harrison, 76, who boarded at HARDY's home was found dead in another bedroom, Scarbrough said.

Both had been shot with a .22 caliber rifle.

Scarbrough said HARDY was shot from the back and the bullet entered the base of his scull.
Mrs. Harrison had been shot in the left temple and was found lying on her bed with the rifle beside her.
Scarbrough said Mrs. Harrison had been renting a room at the HARDY home for several months. HARDY was a night shift worker at Dixie Mills. His wife was away from home working at the time of the shooting.
Scarbrough said Mrs. Harrison apparently shot HARDY and then went to her bedroom and took her own life. One cartridge shell was found in the rifle and one was located in one of the other rooms of the house.
Scarbrough said HARDY recently was ordained a minister of a Church of God on Clark Street. He said Mrs. Harrison had been active in organizing the new church.

Officers have been unable to establish a motive for the killing. They estimate the time of death at shortly after noon Wednesday.
