Joseph Rupert Dupuy (pronounced do-pay) was born in Texas in a family of 16 children. His father moved the family Roswell, New Mexico in 1909, and homesteaded in the New Hope community. In the 1920 census he was living with his widowed mother and a younger brother Luther near Gainesville TX. His brother at that time was working as a farm hand near Lockney, Flyod County TX. He came to Illinois along with his brother, Edmond via hopping freight trains as teenagers. He arrived in Galesburg, met my grandmother Olive F. Wilder Curless, and moved to Chicago where he worked as an auto mechanic at a Cadillac garage. They later came back to Galesburg and worked at the Chevrolet garage. In 1951 they moved to Okquawka, IL where they bought a feed store and then started farming. They later moved to west of Rte 41 at St. Augustine, IL on Rte 116 about 3 miles. He farmed there until he passed away. They adopted a daughter and named her June in 1939. She is buried in the Knoxville Illinois cemetery as June Graham. His wife Olive had a son Thomas E. Curless from a previous marriage.

Gravesite Details

His birth record shows 1900 as his birthdate, the 1910 Census showed him as 6 yrs old in April 1910. His tombstone is correct.
