Jane's father was Samuel Gilbert Taylor born in 1811 in Russell County, VA and died of cholera , along with 3 children, on the Oregon Trail in June 1852. Her mother was Nancy Phipps born 1814 in what is now Alleghany County, North Carolina and died in 1861 in Yreka, Siskiyou County, California. Despite what is claimed in Nancy's Find-a-Grave bio, her burial place is unknown.

Jane Taylor and Pleasant Howell married 26 Jul 1857 in Siskiyou County. Pleasant died in Weston, Umatilla County, Oregon 14 Feb 1880. She remarried Jackson Nelson in 1897; the couple divorced in 1919.
