When he joined the majors, he was the youngest player in the American League at 17 years old. Selected to the All-Star team in 1950, which was the best year of his career where he tallied a 19-12 record and a league-leading four shutouts. In his 12-year career, he tabulated a 87-91 record with a 4.14 ERA and 639 strikeouts.
