Mike died at his home eight miles east of Coffeyville after being sick for several months. He was the son of William and Martha (Crane) Atchison. He married Juliann Shultz in March 1862 in Madison, Illinois but later divorced. He married Elizabeth J. Whaley on September 23, 1878, in Montgomery County, Kansas and had a daughter, Bart Pearl.
His brother, John H. Atchinson, is buried at Mound Valley Cemetery.
