CRESAPTOWN, MD – Verna A. Burkett, 92, of Cresaptown, MD, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, WV.
Born on February 11, 1921 in Saxton, PA, she was a daughter of the late William B. and Margaret (Carbaugh) Allison.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, William R. Burkett; four brothers, Tom, Roy, Donald "Bud" and John; three sisters, Mary, Zana and Olive; and a granddaughter, Allison S. Burkett.
Verna graduated from Saxton Liberty High School in 1939 and worked at Saxton Bottling Co., Celanse Co., Mt. Airy Shirt Factory, and her son's dental practice. She was an active member of the Keyser Presbyterian Church during the 1950's and 60's and presently a member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Keyser DeMolay Mothers Club and Women of the Moose Chapter #191, Keyser.
Mrs. Burkett was a homemaker and she and her husband raised their family in Keyser for 20 years. She spent most of her life residing in the Keyser-Cumberland region as well as Eldersburg, MD. She loved baking, sewing, was an avid reader and had a passion for gambling and bingo. She was a fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Ravens and Mountaineers and spent many years traveling with her husband and friends in the Maryland Travelers Group. She was also a dedicated and loving caregiver to her sister Zana.
Surviving are one son, W. Paul Burkett and wife Mary Jo of Mt. Airy, MD; one daughter, Marjorie J. Fazzalore and husband Rob of Keyser; sister-in-law, Margaret Thomas of Oakland, MD; four grandchildren, Brian Faulk and wife Amanda, Celena Fazzalore, Ryan Burkett and Robert Fazzalore, III and wife Jaime; three great-grandchildren, Emma J. Burkett-Bryant, Ilario Fazzalore, and Isabella Fazzalore; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday, June 10, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Hal Atkins officiating.
Interment will follow in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
The family would like to express thanks to Potomac Valley Hospice.
