RICHMOND, Vt. - Barbara Woodin Beckwith, 90, of Richmond, Vt., died May 23, 2013, in the Vermont Respite House, in Williston, after a brief terminal illness.
She was the daughter of Leonard and Hilda Beckwith of Berkeley, Calif.; New York City; and Richmond, Vt.
Barbara was born in Fresno, Calif., on Oct. 15, 1922.
She graduated from The Anna Head School in Berkeley and attended Barnard College in New York City. In her youth, she was a member of the junior company at the San Francisco Opera Ballet and trained with the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She had an intense interest in travel and fulfilled this desire by becoming a flight attendant for Pan Am and then Delta Airlines. She traveled the world but was stationed longest in Beirut, Lebanon, and later in Lisbon, Portugal. While in Lisbon, she acquired one of her three horses and became quite proficient in the equestrian art of dressage. Besides her love of animals, Barbara had a keen appreciation of art, enjoyed music, particularly opera, and kept fit with yoga and Zumba. Upon her retirement from traveling the world with Delta in 2001, Barbara settled happily among the Vermont hills she loved in the house in Richmond which she inherited from her parents.
She is survived by her sisters, Norine Grant of Richmond, Vt., and Charlotte Mitchell (husband, Dr. Alexander Mitchell) of Onchiota, N.Y.; seven nieces and nephews; and nine greatnieces and nephews.
