Merle Lewellen, Jr. passed away at home with family members at his bedside on June 1st at 3:45pm. He fought against cancer for 5 years and spent his last 2 months at home with his devoted wife and daughter taking care of him.

Merle was born in Enid, OK on July 26, 1935 as eldest son of Merle and Mabel (Karns) Lewellen. He lived in Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Iowa, then settled in WA in 1966, and remained in Burlington for the rest of his life.

He met Dolores Hacker in January of 1950 in Meade, KS where they went to high school. They were married at the Methodist Church on May 13, 1956. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this year. They had Steven Jay, their first born on February 5th, 1956 at the Nellis Air Force base. Debra Denise followed and was born on June 10th, 1958 and Brenda Sue was their last born on June 20th, 1959.

He joined the US Marine Corp in 1954 and served for 3 years. He moved his family to WA State and worked on modules being sent to the Alaskan oil pipeline. He worked out of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union #26 until he retired. He worked at real estate for a few years and then returned to the union for their benefits and retirement plan, which turned out to be a wise move.

Merle was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cell cancer in 2008 and it went into the liver and lungs in 2013. Many thanks to Dr. Mathey and the North Puget Cancer Care Center in Sedro-Woolley and Dr. Stark and Burlington Family Practice for their wonderful care and support.

Merle belonged to the Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree mason. He served as an officer of the Burlington Lodge and was in Eastern Star as well. He served as the "Rainbow" dad while Brenda was in Rainbow Girls. He joined the Allen Methodist Church in the 1970's. He became a "Great Grandpa" to McKenna Jean on July 1st of 2011. She was papa's girl and always made him smile. In his last days when she'd kiss his cheek and talk to him his eyes fluttered open and a smile came to his face. She sang "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" to her special papa.

He was a member of the Skagit Golf & Country Club and enjoyed playing golf 3 days a week. He made good friends that visited him long after he was able to play. He treasured those coffee sessions with the guys. He loved to watch sports on TV. He loved hockey season and the Flyers. He watched many of the pro football teams and spent years going to the UW Huskies games in Seattle. He spent time on his computer reading newspapers from different states and cities and loved playing solitaire. He loved Hawaii and spent several weeks there in the wintertime.

Merle was preceded in death by his son Steve on April 16th 2005; and his daughter Debra on June 10th 1958.

Merle is survived by his wife, Dolores (at home); daughter Brenda Green (Tim) of Mount Vernon; and 3 grandsons, Adam (Jackie) Lewellen of Sedro-Woolley, Justin Green of Mount Vernon, and Steven Mannon (Lisa) of Reno, NV; and great-granddaughter McKenna Jean Lewellen of Mount Vernon.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Sunday, June 9th at the Allen Methodist Church located at 16775 Allen West Rd., Bow, WA. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Hulbush Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Internment will be at Burlington's Greenhills Memorial Cemetery on Gardner Road.
