J. B. MONTGOMERY
Former Councilman, Democrat Leader Was 83
J. B. Montgomery, 83, 1324 W. Central Ave., died at 1010 a.m. Friday at McCune Brooks Hospital where he was admitted Thursday. He had been ill for several months.
He was born Feb. 24, 1907 at Agency, Missouri. He was a graduate of Plattsburg (Mo.) High School. He as an employee with Hercules Inc. for 24 years, retiring in 1970.
He served 11 years as a Carthage City Councilman from the Second Ward. He also served several terms as chairman of the Carthage City Democrat Committee.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a men's Bible class, and the Hercules Retiree Club.
He was married to Sarah Whisler October 11, 1933 in Carthage. She survives. He and his wife moved to Plattsburg after their marriage and returned to Carthage in 1936.
Other survivors include a son, Charles Montgomery, Joplin; two daughters, Darlene Johnson, Tulsa, Okla., and Susan Long, Carl Junction; a brother John Montgomery, Smithville; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Carthage. The rev. S. Ray Crews will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
Members of the Hercules Retirees Club will be seated in a group. The family will received friends at 4-5 p.m. Sunday at the Knell Mortuary.
