Chester "Chet" Tomassoni

Was born March 15, 1919, in Hibbing to Guido and Josephine (Sabbatini) Tomassoni. He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1937 and had been a Hibbing and Chisholm resident throughout his life..
Chester was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater from Sept. 24, 1943, and was discharged on March 31, 1946; later was united in marriage on Sept. 14, 1946, to Helen Mae Bertolini. They raised sons' John, Dick, David and daughter Mary Jo.

He was part of an underwater demolition team the future US Navy Seals predecessor, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism at the WWII battle of Guam.

Chet began his work career as a machinist in Uncle Ed Sabbatini's shop as a teenager. After the war, he opened his own machine shop in Bemidji, Minn., from 1948 to 1953. He later attended college at Michigan Tech to complete his engineering degree then worked for 22 years as a mechanical engineer, finishing his working as a maintenance superintendent with the Hanna Mining Co, retiring in 1982.

His unending participation in the construction of the Chisholm Sports Arena was instrumental. Later the community sports facility was renamed 'The Chet Tomassoni Memorial Arena' in honor of his thankless efforts. Chet also did similar work at the Fairgrounds Arena in Hibbing which resulted in the "Chet Tomassoni Pee Wee and Bantam Hockey Tournament." He will be sadly missed by family, friends and the community.

Chet was a kind and generous man of high standing. He was well known for his sharp mind and engineering talents.

He passed away at 94, June 2, 2013, at Fairview University Medical Center in Hibbing, with his loving family by his side ending a well lived long life.

At the time of his death the family survivors include his wife, Helen; children: John (Nancy) Tomassoni , Richard (Jane Gleason) Tomassoni, MN Senator, David (Charlotte) Tomassoni and Mary Jo (Richard) Newbauer; eight grandchildren, Chauntell Clemmer, Dante Tomassoni, Annie Tomassoni, Danny Tomassoni, Brian Tomassoni, Tommy Newbauer, Katie Tomassoni and Ellie Tomassoni; five great-grandchildren; sister, Rita Byrns; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Timmy Tomassoni; and brother, John Tomassoni.
