MANSFIELD: Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less. Jean Pittenger never talked about herself. Her focus was on others – she worried about everyone but herself. Founded in deep love for her family, her care and concern was on them. She modeled Paul's admonition to the Ephesians: "Be humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." (Eph 4:2)
Jean passed in to the Lord's care Sunday afternoon July 31, 2022 in Wedgewood Estates. She was 95.
Born Jean P. Cox on October 5, 1926 to parents Fred R. and Mary Jane (Butterbaugh) Cox, she was graduated from Madison High School.
On December 14, 1944 she married Russell E. Pittenger, and while he served in the military, Jean worked as a secretary in Washington, D.C.
After the war, they returned to Mansfield, and Jean eventually accepted a position as secretary with The Ohio Brass.
A member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Jean enjoyed knitting and yard work. A marvelous cook, Jean's devilled eggs, butterscotch pie, and "Christmas beef brisket" were a love language all their own!
She is survived by her daughter Connie (Dan) Jensen of Findlay; her son Dennis (Debbie) Pittenger of Napa, CA; grandchildren Allie Pittenger of Napa, CA, Lisa (Chris) LaCongo of Holland, NY, and Todd (Heidi) Jensen of Powell; great grandchildren Andrew LaCongo and Marcos Jensen; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Russell Pittenger, she was preceded in death by sisters Ima Snyder, Dortha Palm. Eileen Beckel, JoAnne Stephenson, and Bonnie Daiber.
The Pittenger family will receive guests Tuesday, August 9, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where her funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. The Rev. Jonathan Stufft will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
