Walter Devereux of Bodenham & Weobley, Herefordshire—Knight, Sheriff of Herefordshire, and Member of Parliament, who died on 25 June 1402, 3 days after the Battle of Pilleth in Radnorshire (now Powys) against Owain Glyndwr.
Walter had married the Lady of Weobley, Agnes de Crophull, the de Lacy and de Verdon heiress; their descendants became Viscounts Hereford (cr.1550) and Earls of Essex (cr.1572). The effigies of Agnes and her 3rd husband Sir John Merbury of Lyonshall, also lie in the chancel at Weobley.

Sir Walter Devereux, to whom Richard II committed the forests and castles of the Earl of Hereford 1387; and was killed fighting against Owen Glendower 1403, leaving Walter, with four younger sons (Richard, John, Stephen, Roger) and a daughter (Joan, married Thomas Swynford). [Burke's Peerage]

From _History of Parliament_, 1386-1421, v2, p783:
"...English defeat at the battle of Pilleth on 22 June. There Sir Walter was mortally wounded, and he died three days later. 5

5. The inscription on the tomb of Sir Walter’s da. Elizabeth (wife of John Milbourne, esquire) at Burghill, Herefs., states that her father ‘interfectus fuit bello apud Pilleth ’, but his post mortem (C137/34/9), claims that he died on 25 June."
