Daniel Lewis was born between 1790 – 1800 in North Carolina. His parents aren't known.

About 1817 he married Abigail, probably in Tennessee, as that is where she was born in 1801. Family tradition says her last name was Brown, and they named their first son James B. Lewis, so perhaps her father was a James Brown.

Their first child, James, was born in 1818 in Jefferson Co., AL, so they went there shortly after their marriage. They were still there in 1823 when their daughter Jane was born, but had probably returned to Tennessee by 1825, when their youngest, Joshua, came along.

According to the 1958 family book recounting old family stories, it was in 1828 that they came to Missouri:

"They ferried the Mississippi River and landed at the foot of Locust Street in St. Louis. Not finding suitable land to farm in St. Louis, they went south along the river to Herculaneum, and then up the Little Meramec River into Franklin County, stopping at Lonedell. According to the book, Lonedell "looked like the hills of Tennessee, where they had lived before they tried Alabama, so they stopped there. They had only one dollar in cash and they bought seed with it. They borrowed a team of oxen and planted a crop. The family fortunes soon improved."

The first official record of Daniel & Abigail in Franklin County is the 1830 census, where they were shown living next door to John Lewis:

1830 census, Franklin Co., MO, pg 146
Daniel Lewis
1 male aged 30-39 Daniel b. 1790-1800
1 female aged 20-29 Abigail b. 1800-1810
1 male aged 10-14 James b. b. 1818
1 female aged 10-14 Rebecca b. 1819/20
2 males aged 5-9 William b. 1821 & Joshua b. 1825
1 female aged 5-9 Abigail Jane b. 1823

It was not until 24 Mar 1834 that Daniel & Abigail were first able to buy their own land, 40 acres located at s/w ¼ s/e ¼ sec. 5 T41,R2E (by the Little Meramec creek near Lonedell).

In 1840, their oldest son Jim was working away from home. Their daughter Rebecca had gotten married the year before, but she and her new husband, Jesse Short, aren't listed separately, so they are probably the extra couple listed with Daniel and Abigail:

1840 census, Franklin Co., MO, pg 68
Daniel Lewis
1 male aged 40-50 Daniel
1 female aged 30-40 Abigail
1 male aged 20-30 probably Jesse Short, Rebecca's new husband
1 male aged 15-20 William P.
2 females aged 15-20 Rebecca and Abigail Jane
1 male aged 10-15 Joshua W.
no slaves

Aa few months later, on 24 Sep 1840, Daniel & Abigail's son William Perry Lewis, still living at home, wrote a letter to his older brother Jim. Jim was not yet married, but was obviously living far enough from home that he didn't get family or neighborhood news very often. [This letter is copied from the 1958 Lewis family book.]

Dear Brother,
I imbrace the opitunity of addressing you a few lines to inform you that I am well, hoping when these few lines arrive to hand, they may reach you enjoying the same blessing. The health of the people are generally very good this season in this neighborhood. Crops are very fine this season. There have been several weddings since you left here. Andy Walls would have maryed, but his lover was not in the same notion or he was to bashful to ask her the question and for the same reason I am single and a good many others I have no dout, but there is time enough for me by and by. I must conclude my nonsense. Father and Family is all well. I want you to rite me how it is with you, whether you are in Andrew's fix and mine or not, or what progress you are making.
Remain your Effectionate Brother,
(signed) William P. Lewis

He made his will on 13 Mar 1843, and probably died in or shortly before November 1844, when the will was recorded with the county court. The amount of land and other property he bequeaths to Abigail and their children shows that the family had done very well since their early poverty sixteen years earlier when they arrived in Franklin County. The amount of property they managed to accumulate in the pioneer farming community of Lonedell may even imply that either Daniel or Abigail had received an inheritance sometime in the intervening years. It is apparent from Daniel's will and the 1840 census slave schedule that they never owned any slaves, at least not while they lived in Missouri.

Daniel Lewis's will, filed 22 Nov 1844:
Recorded in Book B. page 9? and following. Franklin Co., MO.
I, Daniel Lewis, of the County of Franklin in the State of Missouri do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say, First, it is my will that all my just debts be fully paid.
Second, I give, devise, and bequeath to my beloved wife Abigail Lewis in lieu of her dower the plantation on which we now reside situated in Franklin County, it being the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section five in Township Forty-one of Range Two East containing forty acres during her natural life, and two bay mares, two cows and calves, ten head of choice sheep, twenty-five head of the choice hogs, one yoke of oxen, one wagon, one side saddle, all the household and kitchen furniture, except five beds, and furniture, all the farming utensils, all grain and provisions on hand at my death during her natural life, as before said, and that at the death of my said wife all the property hereby devised or bequeathed to her as aforesaid or so much thereof as may then remain unexpended of the waistable property to my five children, James B. Lewis, Rebecha Short, William P. Lewis, Jane Lewis, Joshua W. Lewis and the real estate or land to my son Joshua W. Lewis individually for his heirs and assign forever.
Third, I give and devise to my eldest son James B. Lewis forty acres of land, it being the southeast fourth of southeast quarter of section five in township no. forty-one of range no. two east, all so one bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever.
Fourth, I give and devise to my daughter Rebecha Short one hundred dollars, one bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever.
Fifth, I give and devise to my son William P. Lewis one bed and furniture, also forty acres of land, it being the northeast quarter of section no. eight in township forty-one of range no. two east to him and his heirs and assign forever.
Sixth, I give and devise to my daughter Jane Lewis one bed and furniture, also one hundred dollars in money to her and her heirs forever.
Seventh, I give and devise to my son Joshua W. Lewis forty acres of land, it being the north half of the west half of the northeast quarter of section no. eight in township no. forty-one of range no. two east. One bay colt one year old, also one bed and furniture, also my rifle gun to him, his heirs and assign forever.
Eighth, it is my wish and desire that my executors shall sell all my property or the remainder on a twelve month credit that is not herein devised or designated and the proceeds devide equally between Abigail Lewis my wife and five children before named.
And lastly I hereby constitute and appoint my son James B. Lewis and William P. Lewis my son to be the executors to this my last will and testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me made and ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.
In testimony whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this thirteenth day of March in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and forty-three.
(signed) Daniel Lewis

His will shows that Daniel owned at least 120 acres of land (and implies more) that was located north of present day Highway 30 on the east side of Highway N, extending for one half mile from 30 along N and one half mile deep. It also shows that he could write his name, which not everyone at that time could do.

Daniel was buried in the Old Hamilton cemetery, according to his great-grandchildren and recorded in the 1958 Lewis family book. This may have been due to his family connections to the Short family (both of his married children were married to Shorts) who were connected to the Hamilton family.

According to the book, the cemetery is located on a ridge about "a quarter mile from the mouth of the Little Meramec." It is on a bluff overlooking Mill Hill Ridge Road bridge on Oak Grove Church Road, Lonedell. The cemetery is on the dividing line between two separate private properties and not easily accessible. As late as the 1970s, there were three surviving tombstones for C. Hamilton, W.H. Ennis, and Francis Hanna Lewis, and fieldstones for at least thirteen other graves. However, by 1981 the three legible tombstones had been removed for "safekeeping" and have apparently since been lost.

The 1850 census shows Abigail living with her youngest child, Joshua, now married with a child:

1850 Franklin Co., MO census, pg 028
Joshua W. Lewis, age 25, Farmer, $2000 in real estate, born TN
Dianne , age 22, born MO
Abbie Jane, age 1, born MO
Abigail, age 40 (more like 50!), born TN

Abigail died sometime between 1850 and 1860 and is buried with Daniel.

**********

Daniel Lewis and Abigail Brown Lewis's children:

1. William Perry Lewis, b. 8 Apr 1821, AL (probably Jefferson Co.]; m.c. 1841, Franklin Co., MO to Maranda Short [b. 2 Oct 1826; d. 28 Oct 1892; daughter of Aaron Short and Mariah Wall]; he d. 20 Apr 1908, Lonedell, Franklin Co., MO; buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Lonedell, Franklin Co., MO.

He and Maranda donated the land for Oak Grove Baptist church when it split off from the Little Meramec Missionary Baptist Church (also in Lonedell) in 1885, and the new church cemetery probably incorporated the older Wall family cemetery, as Mariah's family had previously owned the land and it was near their old homestead.

William Perry Lewis died at the home of his youngest son on his old homestead where he had lived for almost 62 years.

Excerpt from article by Sue Cooley:
"Dighton and Artie Ella married young and had two children, Vivian Leotis Lewis and Jewell. They separated when Jewell was an infant.
Artie Ella tried to keep the children. She worked in Bill Pierce's store at Mt. Hope, keeping the babies with her while she worked, but it didn't work out.
When Jewell was only six months old, her mother took both children to her father-in-law, David Lewis, a wheelchair-bound invalid. David Lewis kept the two children for a time, with the help of Dighton, who had left, but came back home.
When Jewell was three years old, she went to live with Daniel and Eliza Arnold, with the stipulation that they would only keep her until she was eight years old. Then she would be returned to David and Dighton Lewis.
Daniel and Eliza Arnold only had one son, Truman Soloman Arnold. When Truman was 14, he was playing in a tree in the Sycamore schoolyard at Lonedell when lightning struck the tree. Truman fell from the tree and broke his neck, dying immediately.
Little Jewell was the only solace to the distraught parents. When she turned eight, they bundled her up and drove to Dighton Lewis' home. Much to their relief, they were told they could keep Jewell."

By 1920, Dighton and Artie Ella are separated and their daughter Jewell is being cared for by her father's nephew Daniel Arnold and his wife. (Artie Ella may have remarried to a Mr. Bullock):

Bullock):
